How to Transcend Anxiety when Making a Decision

Monk Mindset for Living Well

Discernment: Discern Carefully, Commit Confidently

Reflection on the Monk Mindset & Quote

From the time I entered the monastery, questions and doubts about my call to the monastery often surfaced in my mind like wood down a river. How could I be patient with these random monks I never chose to live with? Could I forever let go of my professional ambition and be obedient to my superiors? Could I give up sex for the rest of my life? Is God really calling me here?

It’s common to experience questions, and even anxiety or fear about a decision. Did we make the right decision? Am I afraid I made the wrong decision?

Although I had many questions, I also had a great sense of peace and belonging. I came to learn that this “sense of peace” was a key discernment indicator of the right path – whether in a monastery, job, or relationship.

There will always be questions and concerns. But having an underlying sense of peace can help you gain confidence that you’re in the right place, at least for now.

Put It Into Practice This Week

Sometimes we overthink things so much that we actually get confused, uncertain, or fearful about a decision.

When you have to make a decision this week, take a moment to be calm and still. Sit with your options, and listen for where you experience the peace within.
