Choose Love: Love is Your Purpose
Reflection on the Monk Mindset & Quote
Recently, I was in Assisi, Italy praying at the tomb of Saint Francis. Here’s a reflection I wrote while there:
Sitting in the tiny chapel in front of the body of St. Francis. Thousands of people stream by throughout the day. The look on their faces and glistening eyes communicate that they feel deeply challenged and inspired — even 800 years after the saint’s death. He died at 44 years old -- perhaps half that time earnestly seeking God and just trying to be God’s loving presence to those whom he encountered. 20 years of surrender to inspire and challenge hundreds of millions of lives over hundreds of years.
The world is enticed by fame, success, riches, beauty. But it’s starving for saints. Starving for people who truly and radically love.
This is our highest and fullest purpose -- to be transformed in God. Then, because we are transformed, we are equipped to love others sincerely and radically. Countries have come and gone; monuments and palaces have been erected and destroyed, but the magnetic love of St. Francis and people like him are like seeds that endure through time.
